Stop crying over split milk.

I’m going to get straight to the point.

Stop labouring over the mistake and instead, focus your time on the correction. The answer is not buried somewhere in the twentieth minute of yesterday's replay. What happened is done and, in most cases, cannot be undone.

The correction is where change happens, not the scold.

I recently interrupted one of those conversations.

“The change won’t come from labouring over the mistake. It comes from talking about the correction and talking about how to stop it happening again."

The room went quiet.

Not because nobody had thought about it that way before but because everyone thinks they should turn the error into a drama before moving on.

My mum once said to me: “There’s no point crying over split milk.”, ten seconds after I dropped a pint of milk over the kitchen floor. What happend next? We cleaned it up.

By all means, understand what happened. Learn from it, then move on.

Coaching doesn’t happen by becoming an expert in yesterday. It happens by preparing someone for tomorrow.

That’s why I’ve stopped asking “Why?” as my first question. Instead, I ask:

  • “Show me what you’ll do next time.”

Then practice until it becomes the habit.

Until next time, Aileen

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.
The first thing she said to me was: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks... I suggest you leave me alone.” She was a year away from retirement and was completely done with work.  Anyone else would have respected her wishes and let her coast for a year.  After all, she’d been doing the job for years and what was the point in trying to develop someone who had already decided who they were? I d...
Leadership was never meant to be a solo sport
Leadership can be one of the busiest places to feel completely alone. Even with a full diary, an exploding inbox and endless meetings; somehow there are moments where it feels like you are carrying every decision all by yourself. Nobody prepared you for this part of the job. When people step into leadership, they imagine having the tough conversations, managing targets and carry responsibility...
When Leadership Becomes Performance
I remember telling my boss in the first week of my new job that I wasn’t going to make decisions or start improvements for his approval; I wasn't there to impress him.  I was going to do what I'm planning to, because it's the right things to do. I still stand by that. A lot of people spend their careers chasing approval without even realising it. Approval from managers, leadership teams or peo...
